Generally smooth, clean motion
Very bright for its size
Serious color banding issues
Very noisy fan
Intro
The Epson PowerLite 705HD is a small, compact home theater or small business projector that produces a lot of light, but doesnt' have the best color performance. In particular, we saw a lot of banding that turned subtle color changes into sudden jumps of color. The projector is very portable, though (and comes with a neat carrying case) and didn’t produce a lot of heat or noise for the size, making it a good pick for the presenter on the go or for occasional movie watching.
| Section | The Good | The Bad | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tour & Design | Clean, white design | Surface can get easily scratched | |
| Blacks & Whites | Produces a bright image for the size | Lots of banding in grey gradients | |
| Color Accuracy | Close to the color gamut standard | Serious banding issues in all colors | |
| Motion | Smooth, clean motion | No motion processing to smooth motion | |
| Viewing Effects | Zoom lens provides plenty of flexibility in placement | Doesn't have the power to cut through high levels of ambient light | |
| Calibration | Good variety of video modes | Calibration for color accuracy reduces brightness significantly | |
| Remote Control | Small, handy remote | Remote cannot be programmed to control other devices | |
| Connectivity & Media | Good selection of inputs | Only 1 HDMI and 1 VGA port | |
| Power, Noise & Heat | Uses only a moderate amount of power | Fan is rather noisy | |
