Great color performance, overall
Very bright
Terrible resolution scaling
Very short throw distance
Intro
The Optoma GT720 posits itself a projector for portable gaming. The portable part is covered with an included backpack and reasonably portable weight (though it weighs as much as several pico projectors). But the WXGA-native DLP projector has created a problem in promoting itself as great choice for gamers. The color performance and brightness are up to par, but the resolution scaling is just not that great.
| Section | The Good | The Bad | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tour & Design | High-gloss black finish looks slick | Picks up fingerprints and scratches easily | |
| Blacks & Whites | Very bright | Black level decreases dramatically when a small percentage of the screen is black; short throw creates screen uniformity problems | |
| Color Accuracy | Great color performance, overall | Terrible match-up to the rec. 709 color standard | |
| Motion | In native resolution, good, smooth performance | Terrible at resolution scaling for video formats, which could be problematic for HD gaming | |
| Viewing Effects | Can project effectively onto multiple screen surfaces | Very short throw distance; not flexible for all types of rooms | |
| Calibration | Cinema mode offers the best color performance | Bright mode has the brightest performance, but terrible color performance | |
| Remote Control | None | Terrible button layout; IR receiver on front side of the projector, but not the back | |
| Connectivity & Media | One HDMI, and an included adapter for component-to-VGA | Limited number of ports | |
| Power, Noise & Heat | Doesn’t require too much power | High heat output | |
